He looks like George Formby or a young Van Morrison while his music has the idiosyncratic appeal of Jonathan Richman.

Stephen Black, aka Sweet Baboo, was approaching the end of a two week tour with his four-piece band, who after a vote gave the tour a 50% fun rating.

Black writes simple pop songs with an entertaining lyrical twist – there aren't many songs about a campervan trip from Cardiff to Northumbria.

Seeing him perform live put his music into context as Black has a great sense of humour and is a totally unpretentious performer, which made his honest straight talking material all the more poignant.

Several songs he performed while stood in the audience, putting down his acoustic and just singing, a refreshing change of perspective.

He picked up his sax for You Are Gentle and there was a surprising ten minute excursion into prog rock land for You Got Me Time Keeping.

The material was drawn mainly from the new offering The Boombox Ballads, with the single Walking In The Rain a stand out.

The audience loved Black's anti rock 'n roll attitude; his generosity of spirit; and judging by their response would have fun rated this particular show 80%, minimum.
