With their recent Nashville recording moving them away from their folk origins, The Waterboys for a few minutes were just another anonymous rock band.

But Mike Scott's distinctive song-writing and voice soon dispelled the notion. In a high energy set we heard a mix of old and new but all delivered with passion and musicality.

Highlights from the new album were Nearest Thing To Hip and Rosalind (You Married The Wrong Guy) in both of which the Hammond organ was central.

In fact through the whole set Brother Paul gave us not just cartoon theatricality but some of the crispest rock and gospel organ I have heard for a long time.

The evening drew to a close with Bang The Drum, The Whole Of The Moon and Fishermans Blues. Old favourites can easily sound tired and weak compared to the studio versions but these were great arrangements, refreshed.

The support act was well chosen, with Jarrod Dickenson providing straightforward country rock with simple well-executed songs, a solid and confident band and a friendly rapport.

Overall, though as often the case slightly marred by a sound becoming harshly over-loud, this counted in my book as a great gig!
