Following a sprightly support set from Laish’s Danny Green, Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche bounded on stage in what they described as “awful” matching dresses.

“Our brother Rufus sent us these,” revealed Martha. “He wants us to look bad.”

Family formed a major part of the night’s repertoire, with the duo performing songs by Martha’s mum Kate McGarrigle, Lucy’s aunt Terre Roche and their dad, Loudon Wainwright III, among others.

The sisters described their set as “songs from our album of depressing lullabies” – and while there was a dark edge (with Richard Thompson’s End Of The Rainbow a bleak high water mark), Martha and Lucy kept the audience happy with some beautiful singing – as well as the kind of teasing only siblings can get away with.

Their harmonies were remarkable; Lucy’s softer voice soothing the rough edges of Martha’s thrilling, untamed delivery.

A pair of brief solo sets showcased the pair’s songwriting skills, but they were at their best when sharing the stage, rejuvenating Simon And Garfunkel’s El Condor Pasa and traditional standard All The Pretty Little Horses.

The pair seemed to make virtually everything they played feel like a classic, drawing the audience into their lullabies without sending them to sleep.

Dreamy stuff.
