The Rialto opened its doors for King Provider’s first late night gig featuring city afro beat funk band, King Nommo.
The ten-piece band featuring brass, percussion, drums, guitars and keyboard – and of course Senegalese singer Khadim Sarr - morphed from such local bands as Resonators, Lakuta and Voodoo Love Orchestra. They have been attracting rave reviews in the music press.
A recent review described their performance as "An entrancing journey through deep and heavy grooves, layered with Afrocentric rhythms and mystical Senegalese vocals".
Whatever the description, the sound was original and at times mesmerising.
The packed audience was united in its demand for an encore and would not be silenced until the band returned to the stage.
The organisers of the late live beat dance band nights in Brighton are hoping that this will not be a one off.
One of the organisers, James Everett said: “There is clearly a demand for this sort of dance event on Friday nights with live bands and DJs. This will be the first of many.”
Rumour has it that brass outfit, Neon Saints may be next up. Watch this space.
