The so-called ‘dark wave’ duo of Nicholas Wood and Kat Day may have made their sound just a smidgen more accessible on their excellent new fifth full album, Of Desire, but their live shows have always been gutturally full-on. It’s just that nowadays, the vocals are a touch higher in the mix.

Originally hailing from Southampton, the pair took to the Hope’s small stage and, while not immediately blowing the audience away (due to backline problems and the small matter of continued electric shocks from the mics), eventually found their feet.

They built wave after wave of noise, with Wood’s guitar the most deadly weapon they had on offer. Day was much less imposing, fixed stage right, but her vintage synths and the steady electric beats from them were the perfect counterpoint to her partner’s occasionally over the top antics.

The KVB, although still alarmingly young but with an imposing discography behind then, still feel like the kind of band who’s best work is yet to come. And when it does, you get the impression that ear drums will be blown and eyeballs scorched.
