I have to confess that this review comes with some prejudice – the show is not one of my favourites and, at times, I found director Michael Burnie’s post apocalyptic concept not easy to accept.

That said the quality of the performances– both principals and ensemble - is of a very high standard.

JCS is a rock opera that tells of the last seven days of the life of Jesus and in this production the emphasis is on Superstar – this carpenter’s son looks as though he has stepped out from a boy band with all its surrounding fanatical adulation.

Jake Hanson is good in the role and handles well his quieter numbers but is overpowered by the orchestra in the heavier rock numbers. Words are lost – he is not alone as this problem effects other cast members.

Bryn Lines fully expresses the agony of Judas’s torment whilst Tony Bright is superb as Pilate. Ellie Earl delivers Mary Magdalen’s solos with a touching beauty.

Jodie Michele’s exciting, energetic choreography and Mike Medway’s evocative lighting extends this rock opera into a rock disco. The disciplined cast execute some exhausting routines.

Forget my grumbles - the rest of the audience lapped the show up.
