WITH previous albums and tours being focused on what Newton Faulkner can do with a guitar, recording equipment and a huge amount of endeavor, the latest tour had a feel of a musician ready to push away from his roots.

Bidding farewell to his dreadlocks and his simple one-man-show presentation of his music, the Human After All tour sees him working with a band.

A revolutionary step for an artist so renowned for working solo and the audience were treated to a visual transformation of his career.

The show started with Faulkner solo treating us to an absolute masterclass in how to play the guitar.

Then his band comprised of two Tobys, including co-writer Toby Faulkner, joined him onstage playing some of the Human After All album and revisiting old favourites to intriguing results.

He has a great opportunity to be the rock star this generation is craving, but at the moment the music seems at a crossroads.

Before, when it was only Faulkner onstage he could experiment and improvise, but his trademark delivery seemed slightly stunted by the band experience.

This feels like a step towards a more polished mainstream, a step in the right direction.

But it needs to feel authentic, and he can’t forget that the fans want him, his personality, as much as his music.
