A frenetic and charming opening set from Cincinatti trio Leggy paved the way to a flawless performance from Ramones-influenced Japanese power punk trio Shonen Knife.

Playing to an audience comprised of Bright Young Things pogoing enthusiastically alongside furiously nodding henchmen-esque, well, men, the Knives delivered one uptempo song after another with considerable finesse.

Despite having formed in 1981, the current lineup of Naoko, Atsuko and Risa is recent and the band has endured the necessary changes of late to accommodate childcare schedules. All the more impressive then, that they played with such unrelenting symbiosis.

Clad in silver lamé dresses handmade by Atsuko, the rebellious punk-bop outfit cut fabulous figures, striking classic rock poses with pink glitter guitars and crossed drumsticks.

Cheerful, food-based numbers like Wasabi and Barbecue Party were offset by tracks such as Riding on a Rocket and Jump Into The New World ensuring that there were no illusions as to how seriously the band should be taken, in spite of some obvious cartoonish properties.

For a drummer to be equally as present as two frontwomen takes immense rhythmic and melodic skill, alongside band choreography, and Shonen Knife are possessed of these talents in spades
