There was an A4 sheet of crumpled paper, the set list, on the floor by his cowboy boot.

Michael Chapman is 74, an old school troubadour in jeans and baseball cap.

The album Fully Qualified Survivor hit the spot back in the early 1970's and the small hall was packed. He started with the instrumentals Rosh Pina and Gordon Lake.

Chapman's finger picking style is immediately recognizable, those distinctive cadences and meaty bass lines have influenced many a guitar player.

The man takes you into a world where you drift, occasionally stirred by his growling vocal, but always dreaming.

For Just Another Story he was joined by the young cellist, Sarah Smout, who stayed to accompany him for the rest of the set.

Clearly she was busking it with one eye constantly on Chapman. However, it often sounded as if she had never heard the song before and her contribution was very hit and miss.

As a result the cello became a distraction, neither adding nor blending, and the songs were partially obscured.

The man himself continued doing what he does and the audience response was warm and enthusiastic. When he served up the title track from that 1970 album the nostalgia was palpable and everyone walked away a little younger.
