UB40 famously got their name, of course, from the unemployment form number.

But there was enough enthusiasm for the band at a packed Brighton Centre to indicate they will be in work for a good while longer.

Their lilting and, for many, irresistible version of the Neil Diamond song Red Red Wine, certainly one of their least hard-hitting numbers, predictably produced a sing-along and some of the biggest applause of the night during the long encore.

There must have been plenty of couples in the audience who had danced to the equally seductive Can’t Help Falling in Love at their wedding and they could not resist joining in the chorus.

Backed by some strong brass, the band performed polished hits from their Labour of Love Albums 1 and 2, from which Kingston Town and The Way You Do The Things You Do went down especially well, with a blistering sax solo lighting up Please Don’t Make Me Cry.

This 11-man version of UB40 featured original founder members Ali Campbell, with his distinctive vocals, Astro and Mickey Virtue.

There was no doubt from crowd’s farewell applause that the band had delivered the goods in the form of easy listening pop-reggae.
