Marissa Nadler returned to Brighton after a two year gap promoting her seventh Album; Strangers which has just been released in the UK on the influential and wonderful Bella Union record label.

Marissa struck a fragile figure on her own, kicking off with Dissolve from her latest album and followed by Drive from her previous album; July released in 2014.

Her voice was simply beautiful and haunting, demanding ones attention. The audience absorbed what was on offer in silent reverie giving her the respect she deserved. You could hear a pin drop, once the noisy ventilation was turned down.

She was the then joined by her band which added to the intensity, drums, bass, guitars, violin and keyboards ebbing and flowing like the tide, Marissa’s voice the icing on the cake.

What was presented was unpretentious. The musicians were totally immersed in the sound they were creating, seemingly oblivious of the audience at times.

Marissa ended the gig as she started, on her own, less fragile this time, having grown in stature after an hour on stage. The final track Dying Breed from her third album- Songs 111, Bird on the Water was an appropriate but understated finale.
