As part of Refugee Week, the Crossing Borders Festival organised by local organisation Sanctuary By The Sea aims to highlight musicians and music by composers who have been forced to seek sanctuary in a foreign country.

Last night, there was a happy mix of jazz and dance with a three act line-up.

The evening kicked off with some dreamy, late-night jazz by singer Alice Russell and guitarist Natureboy, who played a beautiful acoustic set.

Jazz fans would have been happy with the pairing of pianist Ian Shaw, who is strongly involved in helping at the Calais Jungle, and Brighton singer Claire Russell. Their set ranged from Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Stevie Wonder covers all with their individual spin.

This was followed by a panel line-up to discuss the issues around refugees around the world, which was worthy but slowed down the evening.

But the atmosphere was transformed instantly with the arrival of Grupo Lokito - a mix of Congolese, Latin and British artists who have chosen to make London their home. Their glorious dance music lifted the night to a fantastic party atmosphere with their energetic lead singers and scorching Latin beats.
