Avery Sunshine shone down on a British Monday-evening audience in Shoreham and transported us to the world of a glossy US soul queen.

With her rich joyful voice with a sweetness of tone which is delicious to hear, she cajoled her reserved audience into singing along, whooping and eventually a standing ovation.

Sunshine is an independent artist who sings and writes her own songs as well as plays the piano. On Monday she performed with her husband guitarist Dana Johnson and bass guitarist Sam Lawrence in the intimate venue of the Ropetackle, singing her own songs with a smattering of versions from soul greats.

Born on the outskirts of Philadelphia with a long CV of musical credits, including recently playing at Aretha Franklin’s personal parties twice, Sunshine has somehow not hit the big time, which seems incredible given her wonderful voice. It’s a voice with such power and range but also a joyful quality which lifts the heart as she sings about love, losing love, daily stress and taking risks in life.

She has a charisma on stage with her glitter in her hair and beautiful smile - she can make you feel life really will be OK.
