Now in its eight year, the Winchester festival is set up as a city hidden in the natural amphitheatre of Matterley Bowl and the BoomTown team’s ethos is to provide the towns "visitors" with a spectacular journey through the temporary city and a weekend they will not forget. This year did not disappoint.

The huge site was divided into 12 individually themed areas providing music and entertainments to match the location: there were aliens in Distrikt 5, cowboys in the Wild West and even games of black jack in Charlie Brown’s Casino.

With a diverse range of music, there were parties around every corner and in every woodland space. Each year a new theatrical theme is set to entice or provoke revellers. This year saw the BoomTown authorities deal with further uprisings with a mystery allegiance helping to ensure BoomTown's survival against the powers plotting to stop the party.

BoomTown has many megalithic stage structures playing drum and bass, reggae, punk and ska along with fantastic visuals, lighting and pyrotechnics.

This year’s saw the licence increased to 50,000 and the launch of the newest part of the city, Sector 6, where the anarchists apparently plot. This stage was designed to be the town's nuclear power plant and did not disappoint with crazy animations on huge screens and fire pouring out of the stage at every angle. Headliners included Miss Dynamite and the So Solid Crew. A great addition to the city.

Interaction and entertainment is a key element that makes BoomTown Fair so different to many festivals, with costumed street performers around every hidden corner. There were great sets from headliners such as Madness and Damien Marley in the Lion’s Den and Brighton’s own Krafty Kuts rocked several of the districts over the weekend.

For those who want to improve on the camping experience there were luxury tipis supplied by Katamaka and a glamping area had yurts, bow tents and a whole host of accommodation options as well as hot tubs and a private bar.

The event was slightly marred by a fire on the Friday but the BoomTown team dealt with it swiftly. I am sure many visitors will be back next year.

BoomTown Chapter Nine takes place on August 10-13 2017 with tickets on sale from November 1.
