Daniel Shao and Oliver Wass on the flute and harp respectively were a match made in instruments as part of the Young Artists Series at Chapel Royal.

Despite Wass being a late replacement, their playing together was indefatigably harmonious.

They kicked off with Boccherini, impressively played but with Wass evidently feeling his way to a degree. The premiere of a flute solo by Michael Taplin followed, brilliantly executed by Shao. But this was serious modern music and if it had a message I was certainly off-message.

Gluck’s Dance Of The Blessed Spirits from Orfeo Ed Euridice was subsequently like a soft pillow with Shao luring velvety tone from his instrument and ravishing backing from Wass.

This was topped by Chopin’s Variations on a theme from Rossini’s opera La Cenerentola. What a treat to hear virtuosic playing from a flautist who obviously thrives on taking risks and virtually pulls them off.

Wass’s solo piece was hot Spanish and emotive Da Falla. They finished off with sultry romantic delights from the Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla.

Something for everyone.
