Credit where credit’s due: the people at Concorde 2 are constantly coming up with new concepts to keep the punters coming through the doors.
This time it is a series of appearances by some top-notch DJs from diverse musical backgrounds, kicking off on Friday with an opening party featuring Sasha. A popular choice, as the gig was pretty much sold out.
Sasha - born Alexander Paul Coe in Bangor, North Wales - began his career playing acid house dance music in the late 1980s and went on to become an influential DJ, producer and re-mixer. From 1993, his partnership with fellow-Renaissance DJ John Digweed resulted in some epic sets.
The Concorde show was not quite on a par with the legendary six-hour marathons but stamina was nevertheless required. After a warm-up DJ hammering out some thumping industrial beats, Sasha was announced with the extended stage lights and a flash of the strobes.
The music hardly skipped a beat as we were taken on a journey mixing a range of styles, with a dance-inducing pounding energy underlying it all.
Next up in the Extended series? Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) on October 1; non other than John Digweed on October 14; and Andy C on November 25. Check them out.
