PHILIP NELSON and Alexandru Lazar’s recital at the Chapel Royal was exemplary in terms of musicality. Their choice of repertoire let them down, however.

Their concert was part of the Young Artists Series, throughout which the standard has been high. To see a young double-bass player of Philip Nelson’s quality is a rarity but it was hard to appreciate this treat with three out of four pieces ultimately leaving the audience wanting a little bit more.

Nelson described Pater Vasks’ bass trip as “the eccentric one in the programme” which was initially misleading, yet it ended with a stirring movement accompanied by Nelson whistling.

We didn’t really get his or Lazar’s “wow” factor, however, until their rendition of Giovanni Bottesini Fantasia from Lucia di Lammermoor.
