Taking to the stage against the familiar strains of the Twin Peaks soundtrack, as performed by their backing band, Cat’s Eyes delivered a gorgeous set that lived up to their lush, cinematic reputation.

Composed of Horrors’ frontman Faris Badwan and classically-trained soprano Rachel Zeffira, Cat’s Eyes take the swooning harmonies and impish melodies of acts like The Ronettes, filtering them through their own dark and operatic lens – songs here dealing with unhealthy relationships rather than the teenage longings of their forerunners.

The theatrical surroundings of the Old Market were a perfect fit for the group, chiming with their twisted take on 1960s girl-group pop (complete with leather-jacketed troupe of backing singers); the songs expanded to fill the space, giving the performance the feel of the mid-century variety shows once frequented by their influences.

Onstage banter seemed an extension of the struggles explored in the songs, with Badwan and Zeffira playing the role of an embittered couple, trading jokey barbs and long-suffering sighs over each others’ stage chat – tongue firmly in cheek, of course.

A cover of Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun capped the evening off and left an appreciative audience eagerly anticipating Cat’s Eyes’ next visit.
