As one of the world’s most authoritative DJs, producers and turntablists, Jeffrey Townes provided the scratch dubs for last year’s Straight Outta Compton blockbuster and has released a string of stellar mixtapes and albums, collaborating with the likes of Grammy Award winners Rhymefest and Big Daddy Kane.

But the Philadelphian is inextricably linked to Will Smith, with whom he appeared in The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and created a series of good-time albums from the late 1980s onwards.

A party DJ at heart, Townes is known for lengthy sets visiting the broad span of hip-hop history, and his relatively short spell on this night struck a more immediate, chart-friendly chord.

Dead Prez’s Hip Hop and Outkast’s So Fresh, So Clean, spun early on, ended up as the least cheesy points, giving way to various comical mash-ups.

Eye Of The Tiger morphed into LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out, a Mario gaming tune soundtracked Eminem’s exaggerated anger and The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back was set to a drum and bass beat.

The main man stayed behind his turntables, leaving the MCing to his enthusiastic sidekick.

His smash hit with Smith, 1991’s Summertime, was a joyous exercise in sheer nostalgia.
