IT IS always a source of considerable excitement to browse through the concert schedule in any new year. In this regard, 2017 is no different. A variety of stimulating musicians across the genres will be heading Brighton. Below, we run through some of the highlights from the first half of the year.
Martha Wainwright
Komedia, Gardner Street, Brighton, Monday, January 23
The daughter of celebrated songwriters Loudon Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle – and brother to musician Rufus – Martha was probably always destined to go into music. Her folk-tinged songwriting revolves around powerful melodies.
The Fall
Concorde 2, Madeira Drive, Brighton, Sunday, January 29
Lead by eternal maverick Mark E Smith, the Manchester band have consistently released dynamic output since emerging in the punk era. The Fall’s shows can still be characterised by musical idiosyncrasy and Smith’s absurdist lyrics.
Ladyhawke
The Old Market, Upper Market Street, Hove, Saturday, February 18
The New Zealand artist made a name for herself with a self-titled debut album that fizzed with electro-pop energy and catchy hooks. Her more recent material has seen her stray into EDM-orientated disco but she retains a singular charm.
Laura Marling
Brighton Dome, Church Street, Thursday, March 16
The enchanting songstress’s latest record Semper Feminia is an exploration of femininity. Its intricacy is to be expected given Marling’s reputation for carefully crafted acoustic songs and considered, intelligent lyrical themes.
Craig David
Brighton Centre, Kings Road, Wednesday, March 22
After a period in the Miami wilderness the UK garage icon is back with a new batch of pop bangers. Best known for his hits 7 Days and Fill Me In, David is an energetic performer who now has two generations of fans.
The Jesus and Mary Chain
De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, Thursday, April 6
The rock pioneers are still going strong 31 years after their game-changing debut album Psychocandy. The Scottish group merge overdriven noise-rock stylings with a melodic touch, which can be witnessed in their timeless song Just Like Honey.
Rag N Bone Man
Brighton Dome, Church Street, Saturday, May 20
The Uckfield-based musician recently scooped the Critics’ Choice Award for his blend of rap and blues. One to watch, especially as his debut album is out in February.
