What this screen-to-stage adaptation lacks in substance, it makes up for visually. It's got guilty pleasure written all over it.

Flashdance The Musical follows the plot of the classic 80s film pretty closely, telling the story of Alex Owens, an ambitious young woman, who works as a welder but dreams of becoming a professional dancer.

She sets her sights on gaining a place at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy, but for a working-class girl whose only experience is from dancing in a run down local club, it is no easy feat, especially when romance comes along. The plot is thin but surely most people are here for the musical numbers, and they do not disappoint.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Joanne Clifton plays Alex with wild abandon. Comparisons to Jennifer Beals, who plays Alex in the film, are inevitable but Joanne really holds her own, electrifying during some inspired choreography. Surprisingly, she is actually a triple threat, singing and acting confidently.

Ben Adams, of A1 boyband fame, plays Nick, Alex’s boss’s son and her love interest. He sings beautifully, with passion and power, and has got his acting chops down. It would be great to see him in a grittier role in the future. Carol Ball is charming and hilarious as Hannah, Alex's elderly friend.

80s music lovers are in for a treat with hits including Maniac, Gloria, Manhunt and, not forgetting, the iconic title track, Flashdance…What A Feeling. Original songs occasionally fall flat but the cast perform with such attack that this is quickly forgiven.

The set is highly effective, transforming effortlessly from the grimy, industrial steelworks to the dazzling dance club, enhanced by superb lighting. Ultimately, remarkable choreography and electric performances from Joanne and Ben make his feel-good, if not totally necessary, musical a success.
