Blood Red Shoes

From: Brighton

Profile: Brighton two-piece Blood Red Shoes’s second studio album, Fire Like This, released this week, was recorded on analogue equipment with minimal overdubs. It sees the band ditch the dance punk of their long-delayed debut Box Of Secrets for an unfussy, raw, rock sound.

Laura-Mary Carter, vocals and guitar, and Steven Ansell, vocals and drums, took their name from a Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire musical – in which Ginger Rogers turns a pair of white dancing shoes red with blood by practising for a role.

At first glance they appear to be like the White Stripes with their pretty boy/girl set up, but the driving power chords, moody, swooning, screaming vocals and chugging grunge drums are borrowed from an entirely different era: the early 1990s. This track, Colours Fade, is an epic beast, underlining the more powerful edge the new material has taken.
