Iyes

From: Brighton via Birmingham and Prague

Profile: A year on from their awkward first meeting in Birmingham-born producer Josh Christopher’s Brighton flat, duo Iyes are releasing their first single, ’Til Infinity, on Monday, December 2.

Based around Czech singer Melis Soyaslanová’s sinuous vocal melodies and Christopher’s tribal rhythms, the single was inspired by a combination of watching Big Brother on TV while eating Vietnamese prawn soup.

“Suddenly, Josh starts drumming on the sofa,” remembers Soyaslanová. “That was the beginning of ’Til Infinity. Once we had the rhythm, the rest of the song seemed to fall in to place.

“It’s probably our favourite song we’ve ever written.” The pair had been writing songs together for the previous 12 months, after multi-instrumentalist Christopher managed to convince avant-garde singer Soyaslanová he was interested in her musically rather than romantically.

Their first studio collaboration, Lighthouse, received 10,000 listens in a week after they posted it on SoundCloud and led to Christopher quitting his other band to focus on Iyes.
