The Argus: John Lake Trio

John Lake Trio

From: Brighton

Influences: Contemporary European jazz music such as Sweden’s Esbjorn Svensson Trio and Lars Jansson or the Martin Tingvall Trio and Bernhard Schuler’s Triosence from Germany.

Profile: Pianist John Lake, bassist Simon Brewin and Simon Cambers on percussion played together regularly in various jazz-infused bands before forming this new trio.

They have also performed jazz alongside poetry with the writers John Harvey, Anjan Saha and F D Reeve.

The band is piano-led, using jazz and blues grooves in original settings featuring strong melodic tunes, supported by complex rhythms.

Their new album Up On The Downs was mixed and recorded at DB1 Studios, Brighton, by Chris Turner last November, and released in March, with a launch show at the beginning of May at the Verdict Jazz Club in Edward Street.

This week’s download is a complex rhythmic piece paying homage to Abdullah Ibrahim and drawing on African township rhythms.
