The Argus: Download of the Week
The Argus: Lorraine Bowen

Lorraine Bowen

From: Brighton

Profile: Fresh from an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour yesterday, currently available on BBC iPlayer, Lorraine Bowen is our very special guest Download this week.

Lorraine was spotted by Billy Bragg playing at the Hackney Empire. She went on to perform with him live and appeared on albums including Worker’s Playtime and The Internationale. Encouraged by Bragg to break out on her own, Lorraine, armed with her trusty Casio keyboard, now has five albums to her name. The latest, Suburban Exotica, home to this week’s download, was released last year. She regularly runs singing workshops at the Brighton Dome, with the next Easter singalong on Sunday, April 23. Of this week’s download, Ashford International, she says: “I was off on the train to Ashford International for the first time and by Bexhill was getting really excited. “I had half an hour to spare before my connection and couldn’t wait to see what was there. I presumed it was going to be like St Pancras International with champagne bars and exotic-looking waiters in Continental coffee bars. “I recorded it without the verses as I can't quite get the disappointment in lyric form. Hope you enjoy it. There’s a dreamy video on youtube.”
