The Argus: Omar

Omar

From: Hove via Canterbury

Profile: Monday sees the release of Omar's new album The Man, on Freestyle Records, marking more than 22 years on the UK soul scene.

His first releases were on his father's own label Kongo, before being picked up by Gilles Peterson's Talking Loud label back in 1991, which signed him after his top 20 hit There's Nothing Like This.

Since then Omar has worked with legends including Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Common and Carleen Anderson, starred in his own one-man show Lovesong, which was at the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre earlier this year, and in 2012 earned an MBE for services to British music.

The 13 songs on The Man see Omar investigate killer grooves, Latin rhythms and minimal beats alongside collaborations with the likes of Germany's Hidden Jazz Orchestra and Soul II Soul's Caron Wheeler on new tracks, as well as a re-recording of his biggest hit to date with bassist Pino Palladino.

This week's download is an exclusive remix of the album's title track.
