The Chefs

From: Brighton

Profile: Making their recorded debut on the compilation Vaultage '79, The Chefs were part of the second wave of female punk pioneers thanks to frontwoman Helen McCookerybook.

The band released two singles on the Brighton lable Attrix, and one on Graduate Records between 1980 and 1981. They were much-spinned by the late great John Peel - for whom they recorded two sessions.

As was the way with most post-punk groups they didn't last long, turning into the band Skat before McCookerybook left to front Helen And The Horns and work as a solo artist. They have been credited with influencing the C86, indiepop and Riot Grrl movement which followed.

The band's name is being resurrected once more with a career-spanning compilation Records And Tea: The Best Of The Chefs, which is being released by Damaged Goods on Monday, April 23, and features everything the band ever recorded complete with liner notes by music journalist Everett True.
