The Argus: The Mojo Fins

The Mojo Fins

From: Brighton

Influences: Elliott Smith, Tortoise, Broken Social Scene, The Beatles, Lemonheads, PJ Harvey, Jim O’Rourke, Frank Zappa, Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Johnny Cash.

Profile: The Mojo Fins are one of the few bands featured in Download Of The Week to get on the front page of The Argus, for all the wrong reasons. In May 2007, the band’s vocalist and guitarist Jon Chandler was killed in an accident on the M25 as he returned home from a stag night. He had formed the four-piece with schoolfriends Stephen Brett, Steve Hoile and Dave Russell. The band was signed to Amazon Records in 2006.

Following their friend’s death, the remaining trio knew the band had to continue. They added new guitarist Adam Atkins and, in September 2007, released their first single, Pinata Face, with royalties donated to the charity Road Peace. Now the indie rocker’s debut album The Sound That I Still Hear is out on Monday, April 6, on Amazon Records, featuring singles Always Now and latest release Trick Of Light.

The band have been selected as one of the 12 finalists for the Q Music Emerging Talent Competition, with an appearance at Glastonbury 2009 the prize.
