The Argus: The Pure Conjecture

The Pure Conjecture

From: Brighton and Cardiff

Profile: Brighton’s fertile musical landscape has issued forth another supergroup in the form of The Pure Conjecture.

Based around Matt Eaton – a long-time fixture of the city’s indie music scene – the ten-strong band also features Martin Noble of British Sea Power, Electric Soft Parade’s Thomas and Alex White with fellow Brakes bandmate Marc Beatty, Johny Lamb of Thirty Pounds Of Bone, Tenderfoot’s Darren Moon, Andrew Mitchell of The Hazey Janes, Elevator Suite’s Steve Grainger and saxophonist Julian Baker.

The band’s “none-more-trad soul” debut album Courgettes was released last year, with its follow-up Gendres hitting record shops last month. It takes its inspiration from 1970s Philly soul – complete with warm vibraphones, muted trumpets and vocal harmonies.
