Following a last minute injection of funding last week, Burning The Clocks is set to fill Brighton’s streets once more on the shortest day of the year.

Insurance and mortgage group Sieco, owned by Rob Starr, plugged a £3,500 funding gap to ensure this year’s event went ahead.

Earlier this year, a Buzzbnk appeal was made by community arts charity Same Sky for £6,000 to cover the fireshow and firework display.

The charity has been using the Old Municipal Market in Circus Street to house a giant ship lantern, which will be the centrepiece of this year’s parade. Lantern carriers will be able to put their creations inside to speed up the final section of the event.

“The parade has become so popular, it can take a long time to get all the lanterns burning,” says Same Sky director John Varah. “This will make the whole event work and look even better.”

This year’s parade of lanterns leaves New Road at 6.30pm, passing through The Lanes before arriving at Madeira Drive for 7.15pm.

The 2,000 participants, including dancers and samba drummers, will be following a route which takes in North Street, Ship Street and King’s Road.

Anyone wanting to take part needs to buy a £20 lantern kit, available at The Wood Store in Circus Street, The Hartington Pub in Whippingham Road, The Book Nook in St John’s Place, Hove, and the Royal Pavilion shop.

Lanterns will be lit in the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange at 5pm.

The ever popular firework show is set to begin at 8pm after the lanterns have all been put on the bonfire to mark the end of winter and advent of spring.
