International Ocean Festival Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, Church Street, Friday, September 19: DISCOVER the mysteries of the deep and share a love for the briney as the first International Ocean Film Festival comes to Brighton for two hours of stunning visuals.

Among the highlights from the debut programme are And Then We Swam, an account of two British friends who set out to row across the Indian Ocean in a secondhand boat despite no previous experience; Duct Tape Surfing which sees a woman paralysed in a car accident achieve a life-long dream; and an account of world championship free-diving in Sportlife Saga: Water.

A total of 25p from each ticket sold will go to Surfers Against Sewage, which aims to protect the UK's oceans, waves and beaches.

Open Air Cinema Borde Hill Garden, Haywards Heath, Friday, September 19, to Sunday, September 21: BORDE Hill is hosting a trio of big screen classics this weekend set in the grounds of the Elizabethan mansion.

On the bill tonight is Wes Anderson's beautifully shot caper Grand Budapest Hotel (15, 100 mins), followed by Tom Cruise's star-making turn in Top Gun (12, 110mins) tomorrow and Leonardo DiCaprio starring in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (12A, 143 mins).

Borde Hill will be open for twilight wanders around the grounds and sculpture garden between 6pm and 7pm, with hot pies, local ales and homemade popcorn on sale.

Film Hub South East: Sci-fi Days Of Fear And Wonder Midhurst and Chichester, Saturday, September 20, to Sunday, September 28: A PAIR of Sussex's most fantastical writers are being celebrated in a series of events across their former home village this weekend.

H G Wells, regarded alongside Jules Verne as one of the godfathers of science fiction, spent much of his life in Midhurst, studying at Midhurst Grammar School and setting several short stories and novels in the fictional Sussex village of Wimblehurst.

Meanwhile John Wyndham, creator of the triffids, Midwitch Cuckoos and creepy mind-melding alien Chocky, was a student at Beales School from 1918 to 1921.

A talk by biographer Michael Sherborne on Wells's role in the Great War will open the season at The Fountain, in Southgate, Chichester, tomorrow from 3pm.

There will be further talks on the history of science fiction and film on Saturday, September 27, from 4.30pm and Wells's mother Sarah on Sunday, September 28, from 2.30pm, at Capron House, in North Street, Midhurst.

And there will be screenings of the best cinematic adaptations of the pair's work at the nearby Memorial Hall, with Claude Rains as Wells's The Invisible Man (PG, 71 mins) on Friday, September 26, and Wyndham's horrifying child aliens in Village Of The Damned (12, 77 mins) on Saturday, September 27. Both films start at 7pm.

Seafood and Wine Festival Stade Open Space, Rock-A-Nore Road, Hastings, Saturday, September 20, and Sunday, September 21: MORE than 30 stallholders will take part in the ninth annual Hastings Seafood And Wine Festival.

Among the attractions are stalls from Battle Cider, Webbe's and the 1066 Bakery.

Accompanying the grub is an entertainment marquee headlined by a jazz breakfast from the town's own Liane Carroll on Sunday, September 21, from 9am.

The Color Run Madeira Drive, Brighton Saturday, September 20: CHEER on the colourful runners as the second, and third, Color Runs come to Brighton tomorrow.

The take-up for the initial 11am fun run was so high the organisers added a second event at 4pm.

A limited number of £35 cash only entries will be available on the day for the 4pm run which is raising funds for Save The Children.

The Color Run combines the colourful fun of the Hindi Holi Festival with a 5k jog along the seafront – with powder paint being thrown at runners at each kilometre marker to ensure all those leaving in a white T-shirt return spattered with all the colours of the rainbow.

Chiddingly Festival Across Chiddingly, Saturday, September 20, to Sunday, October 5: THE fourth two-day Animation Nation workshop from director Corin Hardy opens this year's Chiddingly Festival, the village event which consistently punches above its weight.
