Lewes Bonfire Night

Across Lewes, Thursday, November 5, from 5pm, free, bonfire society parties by ticket only, www.lewesbonfirecouncil.org.uk

THE daddy of all Bonfire Night celebrations sees six of Lewes’s seven Bonfire Societies come together for a fiery parade through town before dispersing to their various sites.

This is not a night for the faint-hearted – youngsters in pushchairs and prams are particularly dissuaded as the streets get packed, and it’s a good idea to leave the fur coat at home.

With Lewes’s streets shutting down from 2pm don’t expect to get in by car, and the trains and buses are generally very busy too both getting into and out of the town.

Among the attractions are the various effigies burned by the societies – which are generally kept secret until the night.
