Vixen

Velodrome, Preston Park, Brighton, Saturday, July 14

A combination of performance, art installation and 3D film created by 30 young people is getting its premiere as part of the Olympic Torch relay celebrations.

Vixen was inspired by Leos Janacek’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen, which is currently at Glyndebourne. The opera house has teamed up with Hove’s Central United Reformed Church, the Brighton And Hove Youth Arts Project and the Youth Offending Service for the story of a rebellious urban fox.

It has been created by the young people working alongside installation artist Steve Geliot, composer Brian Lock, singersongwriter Al Start, artist Mark Jamieson and City and Guilds students from HMP Lewes.

The performance will be shown twice at 9.50pm and 10.30pm.

From 9pm, free. Call 01273 813813.

Peace Camp

Cuckmere Haven, Seven Sisters, Thursday, July 19, to Sunday, July 22

A glowing encampment of tents is setting up at Cuckmere Haven as part of a nationwide installation by theatre director Deborah Warner, actor Fiona Shaw and composer Mel Mercier.

Visitors will be able to walk between the tents and hear Mercier’s specially commissioned soundscape, which includes hundreds of recordings of love poetry, words, signals and noises collected by Shaw from actors, poets, writers and the general public.

The piece has been inspired by the United Nations Olympic Truce which calls on countries worldwide to lay down their arms for the duration of the London Games.

The piece is a 20 to 30-minute walk from the nearest car park – visitors are advised to bring a torch.

There will be similar encampments in County Antrim and Coleraine in Northern Ireland, Godrevy in Cornwall, Anglesey’s Cemaes Bay, the Isle Of Lewis and Cullykhan Bay in Scotland and Dunstanburgh Castle in Craster, Northumberland.

From 9.30pm to 5.30am, free. Booking advised at www.peacecamp2012.com

28 Days

Baker Mamonova Gallery, Norman Road, St Leonards, Saturday, July 14, to Friday, July 27

<> The final works by artist Diane Hoskins are going on display in St Leonards.

Hoskins died earlier this year at the age of 71, following a three-year battle with cancer. She spent her last 28 days painting on her new iPad, creating an estimated 50 paintings over the period.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a large flat screen with a constantly running video showing her pictures being built up stroke by stroke.

“Diane created the pictures using the Brushes app, which [her son] Cass downloaded on to her iPad for her, having just read a newspaper article about Hockney’s iPad paintings at the Royal Academy,” says her partner of 15 years Patrick Robbins.

“She drew cats, seagulls, flowers – whatever she could see around her – and some wonderful abstracts, too. They all have an extraordinary energy, vividness and brightness.”

A selection of 16 pictures will be on display, with limited-edition unframed prints available to buy at £70 each in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, and the McCartney Day Unit at Hastings’ Conquest Hospital.

Starts Tues to Sat 10am to 4pm, Sun and Mon by appointment, free.
