Chambers Bistro, Shoreham: review
SITUATED on the ground floor of the beautifully restored Old Town Hall in Shoreham, Chambers certainly isn’t lacking in character or charm.
Behind the building’s grand facade, the candle-lit restaurant offers the perfect setting to enjoy a meal in a relaxed environment.
We arrived at Chambers on a Saturday night, but the crowds of Shoreham’s High Street felt like a world away once we’d stepped inside.
The staff at the family-run restaurant were friendly and welcoming while giving us plenty of time to study the menu before taking our orders.
Two G&Ts and an appetiser of olives later, we decided on our starters.
After a rundown on the night’s specials from the well-informed waiter, I went for the shredded confit duck rolls served with mixed salad and a sweet plum dip (£6.95) while my partner went for seared king scallops on a creamy pea puree, crispy bacon and port reduction (£8.95).
The duck - as were the scallops - was beautifully cooked and the rolls perfectly crispy. My only criticism would be I would have liked a little more sweet plum dip.
For mains, I opted for pan-fried seabass fillets with creamy potato dauphinoise, green beans, mussels and mariniere sauce (£16.50).
My partner chose the surf and turf fillet steak with part peeled king prawns, crayfish, seared squid and garlic butter (£19.75).
The mussels in my main were particularly delicious, as was the steak and the prawns in my partner’s.
Although perfectly satisfied by our starters, mains (both generous portions) and almost-empty bottle of wine, we couldn’t resist trying a dessert.
The banoffee cheesecake with caramel and summer berry compote (£6) and cappuccino crème brûlée with cinnamon chantilly, almond tuille and amaretto sauce (£6) did not disappoint either.
Despite the fact Chambers is placed in the small town of Shoreham, once inside, you could be in London, New York or Paris.
The natural energy of the place is something all restaurants want to create.
Chambers edges on the more expensive side, but for a special occasion, a romantic evening, or if you simply feel like treating yourself with your family or friends, I couldn't recommend it enough.
