Warm and welcoming, with a mouth watering range of healthy and hearty home cooked food.

That is the atmosphere which hits you as you walk into the newly refurbished Seven Stars pub in Brighton.

The decor is trendy but comfortable – with big wooden tables, sofa seats and cosy chairs you can easily sink into as you relax with a cocktail.

The music is eclectic – toe tapping and easy listening at the same time.

The bar’s signature drink is the Seven Stars Serious Bloody Mary, served in a jar complete with gherkin and celery.

It is definitely a drink which will perk you up and kick start your evening.

The food offering has a homely, rustic feel to it – and was every bit as filling and delicious.

Fresh food, plenty of local produce and ingenious presentation styles all abound in the latest menu compiled by new head chef Simon Hatton. You will not be disappointed with the portion sizes or the flavours.

There is a great mix of local produce – particularly cheese – fish, meat, vegetarian dishes with inventive flavours and plenty for someone looking for a healthy meal out, as well as something more indulgent.

The thyme and honey seasoning adds a sweet, juicy flavour to the baked camembert starter – which is served with tasty grilled fresh sourdough bread.

Roasted garlic ready to spread on a mix of warm breads was a really nice touch for a starter, side, or simply something to nibble.

The doorstop-sized, fluffy, triple cooked beef dripping chips were the perfect accompaniment to the 21-day aged rump steak.

The Brighton Blue sauce was a deliciously thick and creamy addition. Polished off with the biggest beer battered onion rings, somehow I still found room for dessert.

The Lemon Posset – served in a large jam jar with homemade cinnamon shortbread – was the right mix of sharp and sweet and a great way to clear the palate after the savoury courses.

The pub’s facelift and new management has made a big impression.

It’s relaxed and friendly – great for a special meal out or informal dinner for friends or family – with a focus on tasty, wholesome food. Flora Thompson 27 Ship St, Brighton, East Sussex BN1 1AD01273 258800 www.sevenstarsbrighton.co.uk
