Levellers

St Bartholomew’s Church, Ann Street, Brighton, Friday, July 19

Brighton's most successful band are playing a homecoming gig to mark their 25th anniversary.

Levellers sold more silver, gold and platinum albums than any other act in the 1990s, with debut Weapon Called The Word selling more than 300,000 copies despite never breaking into the album charts.

Through their Kemp Town studio Metway, they helped launch the careers of Brighton names including Electric Soft Parade, Electralane and Clearlake. And they have also established their own anti-corporate Beautiful Days festival in Devon, which celebrated its tenth anniversary last year.

They built their career on a relentless touring schedule and over the years have gained a reputation as a great live act – but it’s been a long while since they played a headline electric show in the city, with appearances generally limited to charity events.

The band is releasing a new five-track anti-war EP The Recruiting Sergeant in May, the title track being a re-recording of the song from 2012’s album Static On The Airwaves.
