AHEAD of the launch of their Devoted EP next month, multi-instrumentalist Nathan Whitington introduces Eastbourne duo Soul Division.
"We both started in a local gospel choir on the same day.
“Every week I’d share transport to rehearsals and over time it transpired that we had similar tastes in music – that was January, 2009. We started by working on covers of our favourite material not long afterwards.
"Our main influences are Luther Vandross, early Stevie Wonder and the British gospel scene.
“Growing up in the 1990s we were both listening to the same music – contemporary pop – and our sound also draws heavily on what was going on then.
"The concept for Devoted followed a time when we were both listening to a lot of Luther Vandross.
“Hayden [Wolfe, singer] wanted to explore the theme of 'tricky love' as it painted a more realistic picture than the love songs of bubblegum-pop.
"Over the next year we plan to start writing and recording an album.
“We've already got some material for this but we want to develop it further and explore some more upbeat ideas."
