Clean Bandit have reunited with the vocalist who helped Rather Be become the most Shazammed track in musical history.

The new collaboration with Jess Glynne is another irresistible chamber-pop crossover.

Jack Patterson, speaking to The Guide during the group’s biggest tour to date, says Real Love aims to repeat the success of Rather Be, which as well as finally hitting the US top ten in last month has had more than 150 million YouTube views and is among Spotify’s most streamed songs, with 220 million plays.

The songwriter, producer and beats man, who tackles bass, saxophone and keys, believes the new single could be another smash for the band. As with Rather Be, Real Love has got a direct feel-good message, life-affirming music and positive chord changes. Mind you, even if there is a formula for making hit records, he doesn’t want to know it.

“I never really analyse it in too much of a critical way. I’d be sad that it’s a lot simpler than I realise.”

Real Love is one of a four tracks added to a special edition rerelease of the former Cambridge students’ debut record, New Eyes, due November 24. The track reflects the band’s relationship with Glynne.

“I guess for us it was so nice to be able to come back and work with Jess after Rather Be.

“It’s about our relationship and how nice it’s been to do that.

“It’s just an emotional love song. There is not much of a story behind it.

“The positivity comes out when we work with Jess.

“Her vocals transform any track and it feels like you can really hear personality in the tone of her voice; it makes the meaning of any lyrics seem true.”

Other additions to the re-release include a version of live favourite Show Me Love – Robin S’s 1990s pop dance crossover – and a new track, Stronger, which features regular guest vocalists Elisabeth Troy and Florence Rawlings. The latter might be an indication of what fans should expect from a second album.

Patterson admits finding time to work on new material has been tough. The Rather Be momentum recently took them to the US (for sold out dates and appearances on key TV shows, including Good Morning America).

And, back in September, Patterson pushed his classical training to the limit as Clean Bandit collaborated with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at Manchester’s Media City.

He calls it his most enjoyable live experience to date.

“It was really magical to be able to work on the score through the workshops and hear it come to life and then perform it.”

The experience has transformed how he thinks about making music and has sparked the germ of an idea for a live tour with an orchestra next year.

“I’ve written stuff for quartets before and created loads of recorded music. But for that project, I was working with arrangers. We first made the score so to see it realised in real time in its entirety made me think about the power of live music and what you can do.”

Clean Bandit are at the De La Warr Pavilion, Marina, Bexhill on Tuesday October 28 at 7pm. Tickets £15. Call 01424 229111.
