SMITHS legend Johnny Marr heads the line-up of a new indoor festival coming to the county this autumn.

Rockaway Beach will feature top alternative and indie stars for the festival’s debut year at family resort Butlins in Bognor this October.

Marr was co-songwriter with Morrissey and lead guitarist in the seminal indie band The Smiths before leaving in 1987.

Since then he has become a British music icon in his own right working with Paul McCartney, The Pretenders and Modest Mouse.

But it was not until 2013 the guitarist released his debut solo album The Messenger following it up with Playland a year later.

The line-up also features post-punk icons Echo and the Bunnymen and The Fall, both of whom have consistently produced records since the seventies.

Late-nineties space rock band Spiritualized will also hit the stage.

A host of up and coming younger acts include the fast-famed Public Service Broadcasting.

The instrumental duo from London performs under pseudonyms J Willgoose, Esq and Wrigglesworth – taking old archive footage and public information films and splicing them together with indie rock and electronica.

The Mercury Prized nominated electronic artist Ghostpoet will also take to the stage off the back of his three studio albums.

Other acts include The Monochrome Set, James Holden, Pinkshinyultrablast, Lola Cult, Whyte Horses, The Telescopes and The Jaguar Club.

Organisers have also teased that a “Mercury Prize winning band” will be confirmed.

The festival runs from October 9 to 12 and will close out the holiday season at the resort. Booked tickets come with accommodation and start from £79 for the weekend.

A Butlins spokesman said: “Ditch the mud and tents and head to Rockaway Beach. This brand new intimate indoor festival is focused on the best emerging, breakthrough and established alternative artists.”
