On The Radar July 10 # 76 Flash Bang Band

HAVING got together in Brighton via South Africa and France, Flash Bang Band have just released new single Spooky Action At A Distance ahead of a planned second album.

They introduce themselves below.

“Andy [Halliday] began the band as a bedroom project. We'd intended the project to be quite electronic in nature. Rod [Roodt] and Andy met via a Gumtree ad when Rod was living in South Africa, and Andy was in Brighton. Then Rod moved over from South Africa to join the band / have a life change, and the real thing started. After a few members coming and going, and a few different sounds varying from festival friendly keys and trumpets, we found Rob [Carmier]. The band changed again mutating into the noisy / poppy / techy / grungy / energetic thing that we have today.

“Our influences change depending on who we’re listening to and hanging out with. At the moment we’d all agree on Deerhoof, Yowie, Mile Me Deaf, Cousin, doomy stuff, some synthy stuff like Be Your Own Pet, Metric and Zun Zun Egui.

“In terms of big shows we once played with Star & Dagger which has people from Queens of the Stone Age and White Zombie in. We did a mad show in a big squat in Paris once, and we've played a festival in Devon to 1,000 people probably, but they were sort of wandering around not necessarily paying any attention.

“For the new album we’re thinking like pummelling death pop mind loiter as a genre. We began working on it as soon as we finished [debut album] Bite Your Tongue. But we work quite slowly, allowing things to evolve naturally between the three of us at jams. We’ve got tons of stuff. The first part of the process is just whittling down what we think will evolve into a nice album, and then just focus on finishing up the songs. Nothing ever happens fast for us though, our lives are fraught with delays and we have busy lives.

“We’ve been working towards the release of single Spooky Action At A Distance being released for a long time. The pressing of the vinyl got swamped under Record Store Day, and the video was delayed for various reasons. We were recording and mixing over Christmas which caused some delays too, so it’s been pretty tough actually working it through because it’s been a pretty hi-fi production all in all, as opposed to our usual ‘record at home’ approach.”
