#82 Glass Sines

TONIGHT Brighton’s Glass Sines play a launch party for their new single Connected. Producer and programmer Ian Upfold and vocalist and guitarist Tom Payne talk call centres, dancing and drum machines.

Ian: “Tom and I met in a call centre we both worked at when I moved here ten years ago. We got on well and started working together on some music shortly after.”

Tom: “We started putting the acoustic guitar with the synths and drums machines. It started sounding good so started writing some of our early tracks. We then got my sister Kate [Payne] in who's a classically trained violinist. We needed something a little bit more and got Sam [Doctors] in whose electric guitar gave it more depth we needed. I've been writing songs all my life and playing with multiple different bands. Meeting Ian was the first time we started to play with electronic drums along with synths.

“We all have our different musical influences and you can hear throughout our songs. There's a lot of bands who say that they don't sound like anything, which just isn’t true.”

Ian: “I love my drum machines, synthesis and repetition. I’ve absorbed, admire and appreciate many genres but for me it will always come back to that 4/4 kick!”

Ian: “Each time we write we let the mood take us, and that will determine the type of track that follows. These can vary but live wise we’re typically keeping it upbeat as we like to make the crowd dance. We have a style that fuses many influences, it just depends how much we lean on or allow those influences through during the writing process as to what comes out. We like to keep things fresh for ourselves as well as those that support us!

“We chose Connected as our first single as it was a punchy track with lots of energy and it just felt right. The next single will go in a different direction. There will be an album and it’s underway, stay tuned for more on this as we head into 2016.

“We’re shooting the video to Connected as we speak. The final scenes will be shot at our single launch show at The Haunt.”

Glass Sines launch Connected at The Haunt, in Pool Valley, Brighton, tonight (Friday, August 21) from 6.30pm. Tickets £8, call 01273 606312.

Support from The Broxton Hundred and Ivy King.
