On The Radar #83 Strange Cages

FOLLOWING the release of their single Pony, Charlie McConnochie from Brighton and Portslade trio Strange Cages talks about their biggest shows and forthcoming tour.

“We’re from the insignificant outskirts of Brighton. Me and Elliott Loughridge are from Peacehaven and Ellis is from Portslade, but Brighton is our home.

“I met Elliott in school - I copied him in science. We’ve been playing and writing music together for years. Ellis joined the band last year during The Great Escape festival and it’s been flowing from there. Some say he’s the best looking drummer we’ve had.

“Our main influences are 1960s garage/psych like The 13th Floor Elevators all the way to modern stuff like Ty Segall and Thee oh Sees. We’re also big Abba fans. My middle name is actually Fernando...

“Our favourite gigs are definitely the ones in small venues or living rooms - the sweatboxes tend to make everyone lose their minds. Our biggest gig might be supporting one of our favourite bands, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar [in Middle Street, Brighton]. It was sold out. It’s great to support bands we like and see how they do things live. King Gizzard had a crazy live set-up with loads of effect and even two drummers. Maybe we’ll get three drummers.

“I think Pony represents us quite well. It’s fast and loud and filthy, just how we like it.

“We’re concentrating on writing at the moment and we’re making some real tasty sounds. We’re planning a tour for September so hopefully we’ll have something recorded and released then.”
