On The Radar Oct 16 #90 This Party

AS they play the This Feeling club night at The Hope And Ruin next month in support of debut single Movie Nights, Brighton-based indie-poppers This Party introduce themselves.

The band features Hal Cleverdon on guitar, Marcus Gilham on bass, Tom Hodgson on drums and Matt MacNeill on vocals.

“We come from Brighton, Milton Keynes and The Isle of Sheppey. We met for the first time as a group at a Smith's charity tribute gig. Half of us were on stage, the other half in the crowd. One of us was even Morrissey.

“The songs came straight away, Matt already had several ideas that he came with. We took them from his head and worked them into the music. Since then it's been a really straight-forward process and we've had very prolific first year.

“We started with an indie feel and have since developed a slight mood twist. We like to think we have the face of pop with something darker hidden underneath. Foals, Pixies and even The Housemartins guide us, but they are not alone.

“Our biggest gig was at Patterns, in Marine Parade, Brighton supporting Calling Curtis. It was end of the student year, sold out and very, very hot. The atmosphere was incredible.

“Movie Nights is very much within the space we're striving for. It’s melodic, catchy and tells a story. It is our first release and a great platform to start from. We're really pleased with the response it's had.

“In the future we are looking at tours, new releases and videos all in the mix. It’s an exciting year ahead with at least a couple of surprises in store for everyone.”

This Party support Sugarmen at The Hope And Ruin’s club night This Feeling on Saturday, November 7. Doors at the Queen’s Road venue open at 9pm, with tickets costing £4 from skiddle.com or on the door. Also on the bill are Mantras and the This Feeling DJs playing a mix of classic indie and rock.
