On The Radar #92 Gaps

AHEAD of their headline slot at tonight’s new music night Spectrum, Ed Critchley of Gaps introduces the duo and talks about creating the first album on house DJ and producer Maya Jane Coles’ label I/AM/ME.

“We are both originally from Coventry but moved down to Brighton some years ago. Rachel Butt came to university here and I just wanted to look at the sea.

“We knew each other at school in Coventry but were re-united down here. We fell into writing together really. Rachel played me some ideas she’d recorded one night and I messed around with them. It was just supposed to be a bit of a laugh but has got a bit out of hand since.

“Rachel listens to a lot of “world music” (I hate that term - but struggle to find a better one.) I think that’s pretty obvious from the kinds of melody and harmony she comes up with. I grew up with a fair bit of electronica knocking around, so I think that’s had it’s say in our music too.

“I’m not sure how to describe our sound. Only that I hope you can hear it’s been made by two people. Rachel creates mayhem and I create order. Either on their own would be boring but we seem to work well together.

“We played a headline show at The Lexington, London recently. It was super busy and felt like the culmination of a lot of hard work. I loved that one.

“Our debut album In, Around The Moments has just come out on Maya Jane Coles’ label I/AM/ME. [It follows a collaborative EP between Coles and the duo]. It’s available digitally, physical format to follow. We have a new single coming out early next year. The vid for it is looking amazing too!

“Our plans for the future are more gigging. More writing. Who knows?!”

Gaps headline tonight’s Spectrum, the local music night put together by record shop Resident in Kensington Street and Brighton Dome which hosts the show in the Studio Theatre.

Also on the bill from 7.30pm are Clémentine Blue, aka Tiger Lion, formerly of French pop trio The Dancers, and singer-songwriter Astra Forward who made a stunning appearance at the Doc N Roll Festival screening of Elliott Smith biopic Heaven Adores You. Tickets cost £5 from 01273 709709.
