On The Radar #96 Sam Walker

SPECTRUM resident artist Sam Walker has been developing his live act at Brighton Youth Centre and working with younger musicians in the city through workshops and jam sessions.

His headline show The Sweetness Of The Gathering Night at Brighton Dome Studio Theatre on Wednesday follows a day spent with the venue technicians exploring the technical and production elements of live performance.

The Brighton-born and Lewes-raised singer-songwriter introduces himself below.

“I’ve been writing, composing and performing since I was a nipper. I joined my first band when I was eight, we did quite a few gigs.

“My influences range from the whistling of my kettle and the drumming of the rain on my roof, to the sound of the raging sea, a white noise barrage, an improvised jazz melody or a full orchestra playing Shostakovich. Melody falls out of the air and inspiration comes from the infinite originality of moments, people and places, beauty, confusion and nature.

“I would describe my sound as eclectic pop full of hope, fury and joy. It’s tender, rocking and soaring.

“This year I played The Ancienne Belgique in Brussels supporting Charlie Winston to 2000 people. I also played two sold-out nights at the beautiful Trianon Theatre in Paris, also supporting Charlie.

“I have released two albums so far. The first is under the name The Muel and is a multi-layered studio record called Once At Everywhere. The second is under my own name and is a limited edition live recording of my current One Man Band set up called Point which is only available from me at gigs or through my website. I only have a few copies left.

“I’m currently working on a new record with producer Daniel Smith from the band The Noisettes. Look out for it next year. Plans for the future include more music, more travel, world domination and getting plastic bags completely outlawed. I’ll be on the road across the world again next year with shows in UK, Canada, Europe and more.

Sam Walker plays Spectrum at Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, in New Road, on Wednesday, December 2, from 7.30pm. Tickets £5 from 01273 709709. Providing support are Collectress and Dan Smith.
