Shonen Knife
The Haunt, Pool Valley, Brighton, Thursday, April 21, 7pm, £12.50, 01273 606312
COMING to international notice in the early 1990s as one of Kurt Cobain’s favourite bands, Japan’s Shonen Knife is celebrating their 35th anniversary next year.
But this isn’t an exercise in nostalgia – the band has welcomed original drummer Atsuko back into the fold, this time on bass, for recording sessions on a new, as yet-untitled album.
Sometimes known as the Osaka Ramones, the trio combined punky guitars with obsessions with pop culture – as captured on albums Burning Farm, Pretty Little Baku Guy and Let’s Knife.
The band, which is still led by original vocalist and guitarist Naoko Yamano, will also be playing the Stewart Lee-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties festival at Pontin’s Holiday Centre in Prestatyn.
