On The Radar #101 The Shining Stars

CURRENTLY celebrating his first decade in Brighton, former London-based songwriter David McCarthy introduces his band The Shining Stars, which has just put out the single Chill.

“We started as a band around four years ago. In a nutshell our influences are 7in 1970s - the brilliant warm sound of a Badfinger single on Apple, Slade's How Does It Feel?, Eric Clapton's Let It Rain, George Harrison's My Sweet Lord - too many to mention but you might get the idea.

“It might sound like we're taking the 1970s influence thing a bit far, but we're actually a proper studio band like 10cc started out or how The Beatles ended up being. That's not to say live gigs aren't out of the question - I quite fancy being the support band on a series of big tours - play at 7.30pm, off by 8.15pm and then get to enjoy the rest of the night however you like!

“The song Chill itself has been around for a while, it's one of those things that works great as just guitar and voice but was really just looking for the right orchestration. We're working towards an album but it's the same as gigs really - what's the point unless there's some people who are actually asking for it? Quite honestly I don't mind if we just put out singles forever, real old school standalone tracks with a really good B side - although I’m not quite sure what the second track on an iTunes release is actually called...

“We re-released our cover of Run Rudolph Run for Christmas 2015, all over the world in every big and small online store. I haven't heard it streaming in Tesco's yet but that day will come - mainly because it'll be out every year from now on in an everlasting homage to Slade!

“I might be doing a solo acoustic show as part of The Great Escape [which takes over Brighton from Thursday, May 19, to Saturday, May 21] which would be great. In the future I want to write more songs and continue to record them with the help of talented musicians. I want to make things that take influences from what I love but add enough to stand on their own two feet.”
