On The Radar #102 Mi’das

AS he prepares to release his new single Feels Like Only Yesterday, Brighton-born songwriter Mi’das, aka Mike Davies, shares his love of 1960s and 1970s songwriters and how his time as a session musician helped inspire his writing.

“Popular music doesn't have to be throwaway. We as musicians, songwriters and earthlings have the opportunity to say something in that 3-4 minute window. If we convey it honestly and concisely it will hopefully then carry to the listener and affect them.

“I started writing songs when I was 16 or 17 years old. I describe myself as eclectic, I love the best of the 1960s and 1970s songwriters but also like anything good that is happening right now. Overall people should expect a soulful sound.

“Performing my own songs my biggest gig would be the Shepherds Bush Empire. I've also worked with other artists and played at venues like the O2 Arena and Hyde Park. [Artists Davies has previously worked with include Jessie J, Rita Ora, Labyrinth and Jamie Cullum].

“I was making my own music long before I was a session musician but working with lots of different artists give you an insight into their method and approach, so I basically stole the best bits. I loved working with an artist called Daley who is doing big things in the States right now, he has high standards and really cares about it being good.

“I've had Feels Like Only Yesterday for a long time in different guises but its landed in a place on the album that marries my love of soul music with pop sensibilities. I chose it as the first single specifically because it was the middle ground and is a good insight to the rest of the album.

“My first three EPs were great fun. They were a chance to show some different sides to what I do. At the time I wanted to make an album but wasn’t 100% decided on the direction so I made three EPs (that added up to an album length) but gave me freedom to have a different sound on each.”

Mi’das’s debut album All Inside Your Head is set to be released on Thursday, March 17.
