In a commercially-driven “pop-up” gig, Leeds-based new ravers Hadouken! delivered a brief and brash performance that shook the walls of Brighton’s Coalition.

Sponsored by a chocolate bar and streaming live on MySpace, the band tweeted that they were going to play the free gig early last week. As such, the majority of the audience were devoted teenagers, with the club barely half-full.

The band kicked off with Rise Again from second album For The Masses, the song’s heavy beats driven by Nick Rice’s powerful drum work. Get Smashed Gate Crash was a highlight, with its declaration that “We are the wasted youth/ And we are the future too.”

Its tunnelling synths suggested we were about to embark on an ADHD New Order.

House Is Falling Down from their upcoming new album was well received despite its resemblance to The Gossip’s Listen Up. The tune’s 4/4 dance beat was perhaps indicative of the direction their new sound will take.

Singer James Smith got the crowd moshing on Top The Lights Out and later partook in some crowd surfing, justifying their reputation as a great live band.

“It’s all about the crowds”, said Smith, as the audience swiftly vacated. They had got their adrenaline fix.
