The Iron Duke, Waterloo Street, Hove, from Friday, June 13

“LAST year we spent a lot of time explaining to people where Dukebox was. Now people know who we are - the word is getting out!”

Mill Goble, venue manager and artistic director of the 40-seater theatre space in The Iron Duke, saw her Fringe audience build in 2014.

And now she is consolidating that success with an interactive summer programme.

LUDICROUS ALLSORTS Friday, June 13, 7.45pm, £5 BUILDING on the growing success of their monthly 12-Step Comedy showcases, new programmer Joe Kenny is starting a chuckle-filled night with a difference.

“The idea is for a comedy night which isn’t just stand-up,” says Goble.

“We’re bringing in improv acts, musical comedy, puppets, ventriloquists.

“If it’s funny, it goes in.”

Already booked this summer are puppeteer Annie Brooks, Shaggy Dog Stories from Andy Cunningham, comedy band Grandma and The Kitten Killers.

LONG FORM NARRATIVE IMPROV COURSE From Sunday, June 22 for five weeks, 3pm, £50 AN extension of Andrew Allen’s regular improv drop-in classes at Dukebox, this will see performers of all abilities explore longer-form improvisation rather than more traditional games.

SHORT PLAY NIGHT Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5, times TBC, £5 ALLEN also runs this quarterly event, which sees a team of actors, writers and directors put together a programme of ten-minute plays.

“It’s a real hands-on opportunity to get involved in whatever area you are most interested in,” says Goble.

“The first event we did was so popular we had to turn people away, so we are doing two performances next month.”
